Earth 2038 – healthier, safer, more enjoyable
By Dick Pelletier
What will life be like in 30 years? Of course, no one can
predict events that far ahead with 100 percent accuracy, but by
observing where science is today, and factoring in exponential
technology advances, we can make plausible guesses at how the
future might unfold.
In 2038, most seniors opt for biotech
rejuvenation, which provides stronger organs, bones, and
muscles; and a more resilient, youthful-looking skin. Those who
undergo this inexpensive procedure have the look and feel of a
20-something, and do not feel old. Mature citizens, with vast
memories, strong minds, and youthful bodies, are envied and
respected everywhere. China has revered their older population
for centuries; now, the rest of the world is following suit.
Earth is safer in 2038 than it was during the
turbulent 'teens and early 20s. Mind-enhancing "nanodust"
science has gained the upper hand on crime and terrorism,
creating a more peaceful world.
Non-lethal arsenals make up most world defense
systems. These weapons do not injure or kill; they temporarily
disrupt enemy thoughts, taking away all desires to fight.
However, most countries will soon be manning their war machines
with robots; removing humans completely from the dangers of war.
Household items; food, appliances, and clothing
can be ordered at little or no cost through a nano-replicator,
installed free in every US home. Replicators have slashed living
expenses, making part-time employment sufficient for most
people. In 2038, every American enjoys a scarcity-free life.
Robots with human-like personalities have become
a household necessity. They serve meals from the replicator,
keep homes spotless, provide security, and run errands in the
family driverless car. By mid-2020s, household ‘bots became the
world's largest industry.
TV, phones, and the Internet are now integrated
into the body. Whether it’s in our glasses, contact lenses; or a
nip and a tuck in the retina, we can call up a screen of
information simply by voicing a question to Google, "Give me
last night’s NBA scores; or what’s the weather today?"
We can make phone calls by saying a name or
number and when connected, begin talking. Or we can request TV,
movie, or virtual reality entertainment and "see" programs
without using our eyes – no screen required. Information is sent
directly to the optic nerve, which tells the brain what the eyes
see.
Deaths from sickness, disease, and aging have
disappeared in 2038, leaving only accidents and violence to end
life.
Molecular nanotech, quantum computing, and
advanced AI are producing powerful robots that outthink humans,
which are causing concern for many. These androids possess
reason and logic similar to us, but they share knowledge much
faster than we can with our slow human language.
At first, these creations were feared, but J.
Storrs Hall, in his book, Beyond AI, claims these fears are
unjustified. "With brain enhancements, we can transfer their
intelligence into our minds and we will always remain the
stronger species."
What's next for humanity? In the 2040s,
scientists hope to create an all non-biological body that
repairs itself when damaged, which will finally end our concerns
over human aging and death.
Will this "magical future" happen in such an
aggressive timeframe? Positive futurists believe that it will.
